(New York, NY) — Con Edison is holding hearings today over rate hikes. The utility company that serves New York City and Westchester County is proposing an 11-percent increase in electricity costs and a 13-percent hike on gas costs. The New York State Public Service Commission is holding public hearings at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. There are also hearings in Westchester today at Cortlandt Town Hall. The company says the proposed increase will help pay for infrastructure upgrades and deal with higher demand.
There have been rate hikes across the Tri-State area. In New Jersey, PSE&G customers watched rates go up around 17% on June first. Homeowners there have seen bills go up around $27 a month. PSE&G says they had no choice but to pass higher costs onto homeowners and businesses.
