(New York, NY) — This summer, there are changes to New York’s boating rules. Every New Yorker who drives a boat must take a safety court, or face a fine. Mike Nagri, an instructional captain with the Freedom Boat Club in Lindenhurst, told Newsday TV there are some basics you need whether you’ve been boating for years, or a novice.
Nagri says the safety course is part of Brianna’s Law, named after Brianna Lieneck, an 11-year old from St. James who was killed in a boating accident 20-years ago. New York state data shows there were 23 recreational boating deaths a year between 2010 and 2023, with most caused by boaters not paying attention to their surroundings.
