Are Long Island Beaches Clean?

beach

(Northport, NY)  —  Save the Sound is out with its annual beach report grading the water quality from last summer of Long Island beaches. There are 200 beaches that border the Long Island Sound and each gets a report card based on bacteria levels by local health departments. Four beaches scored an A-plus, three in Suffolk County and one in Nassau County.

Kenney’s Beach and McCabe’s Beach in Southold, Reeves Beach in Riverhead and Ransom Beach in Bayville got the highest mark, while Beekman Beach in Oyster Bay got the lowest score with a C-Plus.  Experts saye the biggest culprit is storm water runoff.  Beaches with a below-C rating are not safe for swimming.
