(Medford, NY) — One person and at least 100 felines are reportedly dead following a fire at a Long Island cat sanctuary. The fire broke out at the Happy Cat Sanctuary on Dourland Road in Medford around 7:15 a.m. on March 31, 2025.
Witnesses say they saw the owner of the sanctuary, Chris Arsenault, running in and out to save the cats but at one point he didn’t come back out. There were hundreds of cats inside at the time and the SPCA is supporting the surviving cats.
Arson and homicide squads are investigating.
