(Newark, NJ) — A private wake is being held today for a Newark police detective who shot and killed last week in the line of duty. Police say a 14-year-old fired the shots that killed Detective Joseph Azcona as he was answering a call last Friday. There was a vigil held last night for the 26-year-old that drew hundreds who saluted Azcona’s courage to join the Newark police force. Azcona’s funeral is Friday at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
Azcona’s family were on hand this week for the unveiling of a statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, the Patron Saint of Police. The detective’s family was told the statue was being dedicated in the officer’s memory.
