(Bellmore, NY) — The oldest known Holocaust survivor has passed away. Rose Girone died in a Bellmore, Long Island nursing home on Monday at the age of 113.

Girone was 9 months pregnant and living in Poland, when Nazis rode into her small town. Soldiers took her husband to the Buchenwald concentration camp, but for some reason let her stay on in their house.  After the war, Girone, and her husband who survived the camps made their way to the U.S. She worked as a knitting instructor and eventually opened her own store in Queens. Girone told the USC Shoah Foundation that she always tried to find the good even in tragic events, and that living through the Holocaust made her “unafraid” to do “anything and everything.”

There are around 245-thousand survivors of the Holocaust still alive today. Six million European Jews were killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
