(Bronx, NY) — An all-girls Catholic School in the Bronx is closing after 75-plus years, sparking protests. Students, families and teachers gathered outside Preston High School in Throgs Neck early Thursday.
They’re hoping the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, who own the school, will change their minds about closing it in June. Student Briana Cherubino says she’s praying.
Administrators blame money problems, aging infrastructure and declining enrollment. Preston has 369 girls this academic year. The kids are hoping local leaders or even someone like Jennifer Lopez, who’s a Preston graduate, will help bail the school out.
