(Washington, D.C.) — President Trump says he is directing the U.S. Treasury to stop minting new pennies. Trump wrote in “Truth Social” post Sunday that the United States has for “far too long” minted pennies which cost two cents to actually make. The U.S. Mint reported a loss of over 85-million dollars in the 2024 fiscal year on the over three-billion pennies it produced.
President Trump is ready to ditch paper straws too. He posted on “Truth Social” that he plans to sign an executive order sometime this week to undo a Biden-era plan to phase out plastic straws in favor of paper ones. The Biden administration ordered a phaseout of single-use plastic from the federal government’s food service operations, packaging and events by 2027, and from all other federal operations by 2035.
