Trash Bins May Not Really Be ‘Rat-Proof’

(New York, NY) – The war on rats has developed a new front. The plastic trash bins that were labeled as impermeable by the rodents seem to be vulnerable to rats. The New York Post reports that a container was spotted in Williamsburg with a “rat-sized hole”. Last summer, Mayor Eric Adams boasted that the mandated containers would be able to gnaw away at the city’s massive rat population.

The trash bins were part of an effort led by the Department of Sanitation beginning in November, requiring buildings with 9 units or less to roll out their trash in the bins, rather than leaving it bagged up on the sidewalks. Some local residents do believe that there have been fewer rat sightings, but they give the credit to the end of outdoor dining across the five boroughs.
