(New York, NY) – Following what’s been reported as a “last minute invite,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams is in Washington, DC for Inauguration Day. Spokesman Fabien Levy says: “In the early hours of Monday morning, the Trump administration reached out inviting Mayor Adams to attend the inauguration at the incoming administration’s request. Mayor Adams accepted on behalf of New York City.”
Notably, this means that Mayor Adams decided not to attend several events honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day — including the high profile event held annually at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Levy explained in a follow-up message on X: “As the mayor has repeatedly said, America has chosen a new national leader and we must work together to build a safer, stronger, and more affordable in New York City. An updated schedule will be sent out momentarily.”
It continues a cozying of relations between Trump and Adams in recent months. For example, Adams called for a “toning down of the rhetoric” ahead of Trump’s MSG rally this summer. And Trump has suggested Adams could have been targeted by a “weaponized” or “politicized” DOJ — similar to how federal prosecutors went at the president both during and after his time in office. On Friday, Trump and Adams met at the president’s home in Mar-A-Lago. Previously, Trump suggested he was at least open to pardoning Adams, as the mayor faces corruption and bribery charges.
