(New York, NY) — New York Governor Kathy Hochul is proposing a number of changes to try and make the New York City subway system safer. During her state of the state address on Tuesday, Hochul said she wants to place police officers on every overnight subway train. She also wants more platform barriers and LED lighting at every stop throughout the system.
The governor’s proposal comes after a number of high profile subway crimes. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says she likes the idea of adding officers to the subway system, but she also says her cops can only do so much if the root of the issue is not addressed, which is recidivism.
Hochul says she also wants to earmark more money to pay for mental health services for the homeless in the transit system.
