A New York City subway train pulls in to a station. On Thursday, December 26, 2024 a vigil was held in Coney Island to honor the victim of a horrific subway burning. The suspect was due in court the next day.

(Brooklyn, NY) – On Thursday night, Reverend Kevin McCall held a vigil honoring the woman who was horrifically killed on a subway train — when she was lit on fire. It was during the early morning hours when 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta-Calil allegedly poured an accelerant on a still-unidentified woman, then applied a lighter to her clothes — killing her in horrific fashion.

The vigil was held at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station where the crime took place. Supporters said prayers and held hands inside the station. Many New York City subway riders admit they are on edge — following this crime and others. A man is under arrest for knifing two people on Christmas Eve inside Grand Central Terminal in a different incident. In general, many people say you never know exactly what to expect.

Zapeta-Calil’s lawyer had the judge waive his court date Friday (Dec. 27, 2024). He has been indicted with murder as well as arson. Reportedly, he told cops that he knows nothing of the incident because he was drunk. But prosecutors say the suspect admitted to cops that he was the man caught on surveillance camera images during the attack. The indictment will unsealed at his arraignment hearing on January 7th. These are state charges. He could face federal charges as well.
