(Charlotte, NC) – For years, the term “Masshole” has been used as a pejorative against drivers from Massachusetts. And it would seem the term is used with good reason — at least if a recent study is to be believed.

Lending Tree has released its annual report looking at the best and worst drivers in the US. Massachusetts has the highest rate of “incidents,” defined as accidents and DUIs. For every 1,000 drivers, Massachusetts reports just over 61 incidents. California isn’t far behind that with 55 incidents for every 1,000.

Both California and Rhode Island finished tied for the second-highest drink-driving rate — with just above three for every 1,000 drivers. The District of Columbia, with four DUI incidents for every 1,000 drivers, has the nation’s highest drunk-driving rate. Arkansas, with just 15 drunk driving incidents along the same structure, has the nation’s lowest drunk-driving rate.

One thing that California has going for it is a lower number of speeding tickets, relative to other states. The Golden State reports just one speeding ticket for every 1,000 drivers. The best drivers come from Michigan, Vermont, Kentucky, and Oklahoma according to Lending Tree.
