A Crime Involving a Drone (And Pool) in NJ

A South Jersey man is being charged in a drone incident -- but it doesn't provide an explanation for the many sightings here in 2024.

(Atlantic City, NJ) – Yet another drone-related incident has been reported in New Jersey. This time it’s easily explained — as opposed to the many mysterious flying machines — dotting the night skies of the Garden State in recent weeks. Now, a South Jersey man is facing charges in connection to a drone and a pool.

This happened during the summer of 2023, in Atlantic City. Allegedly, Anthony Spina used a drone to mess with the color of the water inside pools. Cops accuse him of dropping dye backs into pools, turning the water a greenish-yellow tint. Spina has been officially charged with criminal mischief and conspiracy. Prosecutors allege his antics caused $2,000 worth of damage.

The incidents in question focused mainly on a condominium complex. They occurred over a two week period, and apparently some residential pools were targeted, as well as commercial pools. Prosecutors say the use of tracking software connected them to Spina and a co-conspirator. At least one drone and numerous digital devices were seized at the time of his arrest.

And all the while, drones remain a hot topic because of mysterious, flying objects of an unknown origin that have been spotted dating back to November 18. Many towns up and down the Jersey Shore have reported such sightings. And three new drone detection systems are now up and running as of Tuesday, December 17.
