(New York, NY) – Time is ticking for the app that is set to soon face a ban if it does not change ownership. An appeals court on Friday upheld the law that requires TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or be taken off of phones nationwide.
The social media platform boasts an American base of 170 million users. That potential ban would take effect on January 19, 2025 – notably a day before the inauguration of President-Elect Donald Trump. App stores that would continue to host the app would face fines if the ban goes through. However, ByteDance is not giving up the fight to keep TikTok under their ownership and without any prohibition. The company says they are taking it to the Supreme Court saying it’s an issue of free speech.
