(New York, NY) – A three-alarm fire left one person dead and six firefighters recovering from injuries Monday night. The flames erupted around 7:15 PM at a six-story building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. A person was reportedly found dead on the building’s fifth floor.
Upward of 130 firefighters responded to help battle the flames. A massive emergency personnel response was observed by neighbors near 82nd Street — between York and East End Avenues. The FDNY used drones to survey the area while responding. It appears the flames broke out on the fifth floor and then spread to the fourth and sixth floors — as well as the roof area. By 9:15 or so the flames had been put out.
The injured firefighters are largely being treated for smoke inhalation. Residents reported hearing people yelling “get out!” before they scrambled for safety. Many of them could be seen huddled together on sidewalks, sitting on curbs, wrapped in blankets. They will have to find temporary accommodations. Some could be seen sheltering in the lobby of a neighboring building.
It’s not immediately clear what led to the fire. As of early Tuesday morning FDNY operations and investigations continued on scene.
