What To Know for Mass Transit on T-Day

syndication-the-record-220

The interior of a new self-propelled multilevel railcar during a preview at the NJ Transit Meadows Maintenance Complex in Kearny on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024.

(New York, NY) – If you’re using mass transit to go over the river and through the woods (to your grandparents house or elsewhere) there are some things to note this Thanksgiving holiday. Both Thursday, and on Black Friday, changes are being made to mass transit schedules. That goes for NJ Transit, Long Island Rail Road, and Metro North. The New York City Subway runs on a holiday schedule for Thanksgiving and then returns to normal on the busy shopping day Black Friday.

Buses are reduced for New York City on Black Friday. On Thanksgiving, Metro North, LIRR, and NJ Transit run on a different schedule for Thanksgiving — but there’s expanded service during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the hours leading up to it. The MTA is offering lower off-peak fares on Black Friday, benefitting Metro North and LIRR riders who plan to go shopping in the city. Up to two kids can ride free with a fare-paying adult on New Jersey Transit — through December 2nd.

And if you’re using Amtrak to visit family or friends, extra cars have been added and there are more scheduled trips through December 2 along the Northeast Corridor.
