(New York, NY) — Jessica Tisch, the city’s sanitation commissioner will become Police Commissioner when she takes the oath of office today. Tisch spent 12 years with the NYPD, implementing city’s first text-to-911 capability and overseeing the implementation of police body cameras.

Tisch becomes the second woman to lead the department. She calls the appointment an extraordinary responsibility, saying she will always honor the work cops do on the street. She also made a promise to New Yorkers to keep them safe, saying she is raising a daughter in the city and understands how families worry about crime on the streets and down below on the subways.

Interim police commissioner Thomas Donlon says he had hoped to stay on. Mayor Adams says he will find Donlon another role with the administration.

Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry says he wishes Tisch well, and hopes she will tackle big issues with police staffing and getting dangerous criminals off the streets.
