(Albany, NY) — The New York State Regents exams are about to be eliminated as a high school graduation requirement. State education officials say the Class of 2027 will be the last in New York that has to pass at least four Regents exams to earn a diploma.  They think the idea of teaching to a test hamstrings teachers and is unfair to a lot of students who could demonstrate subject mastery through internships, capstone projects and portfolios. All that is being reworked.

New York is one of just eight states where it’s mandatory for high school students to pass standardized tests in order to graduate.  The changes will not go into effect until the Board of Regents votes on them.
