New England Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye was forced to leave Sunday’s game vs. the New York Jets with a head injury, later confirmed to be a concussion. Veteran QB Jacoby Brissett replaced Maye with 9:06 remaining in the second quarter.
As seen in footage posted on X, Maye took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood while scrambling for an 18-yard gain early in the second quarter (no flag was thrown on the play). The rookie remained in the game for four more plays before being evaluated, and heading to the locker room.
The Patriots initially ruled May as ‘questionable’; but at halftime head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed that Maye would not be returning to the game, with the team officially announcing early in the second half that Maye suffered a concussion. The rookie QB now will enter the NFL’s concussion protocol, and his status going forward is to be determined.
The Patriots (2-6) earning a 25-22 victory against the Jets after Rhamondre Stevenson’s rushing touchdown with just 22 seconds remaining.
