(New York, NY) – For any New Yorkers with a furry friend at home they consider family, the city council may throw you a bone. A new bill has been introduced that would require workplaces to allow for their employees to use any paid sick leave to care for their pets.
Councilmember Shaun Abreu put forth the bill saying that it is crucial in combating the city’s mental health crisis. He told the New York Times that when people care for their pets, they are also keeping themselves healthy. The councilmember, who represents the Upper West Side and West Harlem, is a proud cat owner. He supported his argument with studies that show pet ownership could reduce stress levels.
