Mayor Adams Reportedly Facing More Charges

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is due back in court Wednesday, October 2, 2024 -- as he faces a historic indictment alleging bribery and corruption.

(New York, NY) – Federal prosecutors say they are prepared to bring more charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and that additional defendants face indictment. Adams flashed a thumbs up to reporters while walking into Manhattan Federal Court, as he has repeatedly refused calls to resign.

Initially, Adams was hit with a historic five-count indictment alleging bribery and official corruption. Last Friday, the mayor pleaded not guilty. He is the first sitting New York City mayor to face a criminal indictment.

For months, several different members of Adams’ administration have been caught up in a federal investigation of some kind. The allegations are that Adams made use of straw donors to illegally raise campaign funds, and that he received undisclosed gifts from Turkish officials — in a sort of pay-for-play scheme. Adams has said he’s done nothing wrong, that his attorneys are handling the case, and that city government continues to effectively function.

Federal prosecutors say Adams failed to disclose the receipt of $100,000 worth of flights and hotel upgrades. The mayor is also accused of pressuring the FDNY to overlook safety concerns in order to open the Turkish consulate on time — in order to pay back his handlers who showered him with gifts.

As for when Adams could face new charges, that’s not immediately clear. Prosecutors say they are conducting several ongoing investigations. A protective order has been agreed to regarding discovery material, and the sharing of evidence. There was an expectation that a trial date could be set, but that isn’t known as this point.

Outside the courthouse, two people stood on the opposite side of the street, holding signs. They protested against Adams and held up “Resign” and “Black Donald Trump” signs. There is a possibility New York Governor Kathy Hochul could force Adams removal from office. She hasn’t said she plans to do so.
