(New York, NY) — The Archdiocese of New York is suing its insurance company. Cardinal Timothy Dolan says Chubb Insurance, which insured the archdiocese between 1956 through 2003, is trying to avoid compensating victims and survivors of sexual abuse in the church.
He added that Chubb insurance says it’s not obligated to settle the claims because the abuse of victims was “expected or intended by the church.” Dolan also said the church is selling its First Avenue headquarters and is considering the sale of other properties to offset sex abuse-related claims.
The Archdiocese sued Chubb for allegedly violating New York’s General Business Law. Dolan said that in response to the Child Victims Act, the Archdiocese had settled more than 400 cases not covered by insurance through their Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program, as well as 123 other cases
