NYPD Fare Evasion Crackdown

syndication-utica-observer-dispatch-17

(New York, NY) –  An NYPD officer was taken to the hospital after being shot by friendly fire at a Brooklyn subway station Sunday afternoon. Two bystanders were also wounded after a dispute between two cops and a man escalated after he didn’t pay the fare.  The NYPD says the man threatened to kill the officers and had a knife, so they deployed their tasers and when that failed to stop him, they shot at him

The MTA says its crackdown on fare evaders has also resulted in a gun arrest in Queens.  The agency says the fare beater was nabbed around 8 a.m. Monday on the Q113 bus at Virginia Street and Central Avenue in Far Rockaway, Queens.  It turns out they were carrying a loaded gun and had an active arrest warrant.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has a crackdown on subway fare evaders, but not everyone who is stopped is arrested. The NYPD’s approach is to target repeat criminals and violent people, while issuing civil summonses to those who don’t have a violent history and don’t need services. The NYPD’s goal is to improve the quality of life for New Yorkers by keeping violent people out of the transit system
