(New York, NY) – New York City drivers who are caught blocking MTA bus lanes will start receiving tickets in the mail next week. NYC Transit Department of Buses’ Frank Annicaro says more than 600 buses across 14 routes are now equipped with automated cameras to catch vehicles that are blocking bus lanes and bus stops.
Annicaro knows the cameras alone can’t keep bus routes completely clear and is assuring drivers who think they’ll avoid getting a ticket by popping their trunks that enforcement teams are on the ground looking for violators. Since the MTA started testing out its enforcement cameras, bus lane speeds have increased by five percent and collisions have gone down by 20-percent.
The bus stop zone begins at the bus stop sign and continues in the direction of the arrows until the next parking sign or, if there is no parking sign, to the end of the block.
Cameras are affixed at certain bus lane locations or can be mounted on an actual bus. If you violate the bus lane zone, the camera will take a picture or video and you will receive a summons in the mail.
