Why Is Hochul Sending Out Checks?

(Albany, NY) – Eligible families are going to start receiving checks as part of New York’s Child Tax Credit program. The payments are being mailed out this week according to Governor Kathy Hochul. They are being called supplemental payments that will expand child tax credits to more working families.

To start out, more than 100,000 checks will be mailed daily. Officials say they are attempting to get the payments to eligible families in a timely manner. Families are free to use the funds for whatever they wish including things like back-to-school supplies or summer vacations. There is no application required. Instead, the one-time payment is being sent to New York taxpayers who previously received at least $100 worth of an Empire State Child Credit — on their 2023 tax returns.
