What is the Chipotle TikTok Challenge?

mixcollage-29-jul-2024-09-51-am-9888

People started filming workers at Chipotle when ordering food -- and the ensuing TikTok challenge led to a formal response from the company.

(Newport Beach, CA) – Are the portion sizes shrinking at Chipotle? Chances are, everyone’s had a visit to a restaurant where they felt a bit skimped or let down by the size of the meal. Such is the chance you take when eating out. But at a fast food spot like Chipotle, shouldn’t portion sizes be more or less standardized?

In reality, Chipotle burritos, bowls, and tacos are a bit arbitrary in nature, in terms of their structure. Workers use large spoons to heap in the chicken, steak, pork, cheese, guacamole, and chili. It’s not an exact science. Now, the so-called “Chipotle Camera Trick Challenge” is making waves on social media. The trend has gone viral on TikTok, and it involves people using their phones to film the workers while food is prepared. Supposedly it leads to larger portion sizes once the workers realize they are being filmed.

One video got over two million views, and it looked like the worker started adding more food after realizing he was being filmed. That’s inspired others to try the same thing. Now, Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol says training is being done to coach employees how to make each burrito and bowl correctly — and consistently. Last week, Niccol said flatly: “There was never a directive to provide less to our customers.”
