California Tearing Down Homeless Encampments

(Sacramento, CA) – California Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order today, demanding that state law enforcement begin tearing down tents. The decision comes after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a city in Oregon that was giving out tickets to people sleeping outside.

The court rejected the homeless advocate’s arguments that laws aimed at curbing encampments is an example of “cruel and unusual punishment” and a violation of the 8th Amendment.

Newsom, a Democrat, said in a statement “there are simply no more excuses”. He says that now it is up to cities and counties to provide support to people living in encampments. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticized the move saying that the number of homeless in the city went down for the first time in years. She claims that moving people from one neighborhood to another and issuing citations does not solve the problem.
