(New York, NY) – New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tish say starting November 12th, all residential buildings that have up to 9 units will be required to put their trash into special containers.
The city says the official NYC Bin is available for under 50 dollars and residents and landlords who use bins now will be required to switch over to the official bin in June of 2026. The containerization of trash is one of several efforts the Adams Administration is taking to help lower the rat population. Following a warning period, those who don’t comply face fines.
As of Nov. 12, city officials will have containerized 70% of New York City’s 14 billion annual pounds of trash in two years. “Today, we are tossing even more black bags into the dustbin of history and taking the next step forward in our ‘Trash Revolution,'” Adams said.
