(Washington, DC) – A key ruling from the Supreme Court is being called a victory for January 6 defendants. This specific case centers on a Pennsylvania police officer who entered the US Capitol on that day — leading to obstruction charges. The court’s 6-3 ruling says the government used an overly broad definition of a 2002 law to charge the officer.
Hundreds of charges could be dismissed as a result. Former President Trump is among those charged with obstruction in connection to the events of January 6, 2021. Any charges not pertaining to alleged obstruction are not impacted by the ruling. So, the Pennsylvania officer and others could still face charges for other alleged offenses.
Some legal experts have suggested this case portends well for former President Trump’s so-called immunity case. That decision could come on Monday — which marks the end of the Supreme Court’s current term.
