(Albany, NY) – New York City’s speed limits are being lowered. The changes will go into effect this coming fall, as part of “Sammy’s Law,” named after a 12-year-old boy who was struck and killed in Brooklyn.
The city’s Department of Transportation will soon have the authority to lower speed limits to 20 miles-per-hour across the Big Apple — as a result of the law passed by legislators in Albany. Now, a 60-day public comment period will begin. The DOT’s stated goal is to lower speed limits in 250 spots by the end of 2025.
In particular, there is a focus on reducing speed limits in and around school zones. On streets designated as Shared Streets or Open Streets the speed limit will be lowered to 10 miles-per-hour.
