Baby Shark Hotbed Found Off NYC Shore

(New York, NY) – Biologists have discovered a “nursery” of baby sharks off the city coast. National Geographic will be showing an inside look at that region of the underwater predators in an upcoming program “Baby Sharks in the City”.

Scientists with the NOAA Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office researched the 100-foot-deep region over a two week period. The “nursery” likely sends hundreds of great whites to the Atlantic Ocean every year. Sharks do not care for their offspring, so the great whites are all alone from the start.

Adult great white sharks typically travel North, towards Cape Cod and Canada. The younger baby sharks remain near Long Island, where the water temperature is most ideal. Scientists hope with new technologies, there will be more discoveries about the species.
