(New York, NY) – Morgan Spurlock, the documentary filmmaker best known for the movie “Super Size Me,” has died. He was 53. Family members released a statement saying he passed in Upstate, New York following a battle with cancer.

The 2004 film “Super Size Me” documented Spurlock’s increasing health problems as he undertook a 30-day McDonalds diet. For many, it spread awareness concerning the dangers associated with an unhealthy diet, fast food, and similar things. That said, Spurlock apparently dealt with alcoholism at times — and that may have contributed to some of his health issues while filming the documentary.

Spurlock’s brother Craig Spurlock released a statement saying: “It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan. Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”

In his famous documentary, Spurlock had said: “Everything’s bigger in America. We’ve got the biggest cars, the biggest houses, the biggest companies, the biggest food, and finally: the biggest people.”
