JFK Renovation Causing Travel Delays for MDW

(Queens, NY) – With a major renovation project taking place at JFK Airport, amid one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, officials are warning there will be delays. The 80-year-old airport is undergoing a $19 million renovation. And people are being urged to get there early if they will be flying for Memorial Day Weekend, as long lines are expected at security checkpoints.

The TSA estimates upward of 3.5 million Americans will pass through checkpoints this weekend. And Rick Cotton, who oversees the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, says he’s hopeful people won’t be forced to get out and walk along the highways outside JFK — something seen at LaGuardia Airport seven years ago during a renogation.

Authorities are asking travelers heading allow for up to an extra 30 minutes of wait time. New gates are expected to be completed and opened at JFK by 2026.
