(New York, New York) – The NYPD is getting some help from technology, and no, it’s not AI. Five precincts in NYC will start deploying drones in response to some of their 911 calls. The pilot program dubbed as “drones as first responders” is getting ready to lift off. The precincts include three in Brooklyn, one in the Bronx, and one in Central park.

The NYPD already has 85 drones in their fleet. The New York Police Department has used drones before when they have to monitor an event, but it’s unclear how they can assist on 911 calls. Drone usage by the city in the past include measuring the sizes of crowds, checking structural integrity, and monitoring protests.
