MTA Using Ferries to Expand Metro-North Service

The MTA will begin offering weekend service on the Haverstraw-Ossining ferries for the first time ever, and big discounts are being offered as well.

(Albany, NY) – As the MTA looks to implement Manhattan congestion pricing, the transit agency also wants to expand Metro-North service for Orange and Rockland Counties. A pilot program is being launched, and Metro-North will begin offering weekend service on the Haverstraw-Ossining ferries for the first time in its history. Officials say the goal is to offer Manhattan commuters a cheaper option than driving in to the city. And that’s especially relevant given the MTA wants to bill motorists and extra $15 for driving south of 60th Street in Manhattan.

The MTA wants to implement congestion pricing beginning June 30. But there are a number of lawsuits that aim to stop it, and they’ve yet to be resolved.

In addition to the ferry service pilot, big discounts are being offered. These UniTicket discounts will take 78% to 90% off ferry and bus tickets that cross the Hudson. In addition, parking rates will be cut 25% for residents of Orange and Rockland County — at the Metro-North’s garage in White Plains. The nearby station is serviced by Metro North’s Harlem Line.
