(New York, NY) — New Yorkers will get their first look at new paperless parking meters today. Department of Transportation Commissioner, Yadanis Rodriguez will be on hand when the meters are unveiled in Upper Manhattan. New Yorkers in the neighborhood will now be able to digitally pay for a parking spot. No longer will they need to put a receipt from the transaction in their front windshield. The meter transactions are linked with the NYPD’s parking enforcement system, so agents will know which drivers have paid.

The DOT says the meters will save on paper. They had spit out around 2,500 miles of receipts every year. The new meters will start in north Manhattan, before moving south and expanding to the outer boroughs. The city has an estimated 80,000 metered parking spaces.
