(New York, NY) — Dog owners across the city are not picking up after their pooches. Complaints to 311 have soared. On Wednesday, the City Council’s Sanitation Committee was told to look over a bill that would have them, help New Yorkers curb their dogs in the right way. City Council member Julie Menin wants the Department of Sanitation to install dog-waste bag dispensers next to trash cans all over the city. She believes that dog owners will be more likely to pick up after them if there is a bag and trashcan nearby.

Menin had people living in her Upper East Side district speak out during the committee meeting on Wednesday. Many said they are sick and tired of stepping over dog excrement left on sidewalks. They call it a health nuisance. If it becomes law, dog waste dispensers would be attached to each of the city’s 23-thousand public waste baskets. New Yorkers say more has to be done to punish those who fail to pick up after their dogs. Just 18 tickets were handed out in 2022 to New Yorkers who left dog excrement on the streets and sidewalks.
