Minor Earthquake Reported in New Jersey

Map of New Jersey with star over Hunterdon County, the epicenter of recent earthquakes.

Hunterdon County was the epicenter of a rare 4.8 magnitude earthquake on the East Coast. This morning another 2.9 quake shook up New Jersey

(Gladstone, New Jersey) – Just 35 miles west of New York City, a small 2.9 magnitude earthquake rattled the Garden State this morning. The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicenter was located in Hunterdon County, the same county that was the epicenter of a stronger earthquake that happened in early April.

Scientists are not yet sure if this morning’s shakeup was an aftershock stemming from the stronger 4.8 magnitude April 5th quake, or if this seismic activity is unique. So far, more than 130 aftershocks have been recorded since the rare east coast earthquake.

The Tri-State area does exist along the Ramapo Fault zone, yet quakes are rare. Especially any rattling above a 5.0 on the Richter scale. The original April 5th quake was felt by 42 million people along the East coast from Boston to Philadelphia. If you felt the tremor, you can report it to the USGS for monitoring purposes.
