News: Biden Baltimore Key Bridge Collapse
(Baltimore, MD) —Â Divers have discovered the body of one of four missing construction workers near the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. 38-year-old Maynor Suazo-Sandoval was one of six people killed when the bridge was struck by a cargo ship and fell into the water on March 26th. The search continues for three other workers still missing in the river.
President Biden is promising to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge “as rapidly as humanly possible.” Biden visited the site Friday and was briefed on recovery efforts. He also met with the families of construction workers who were killed in the incident. In his remarks, Biden said the port of Baltimore will be reopened by the end of May, as crews work to clear the wreckage, and called on Congress to swiftly approve funding for reconstruction of the bridge.
Maryland’s House of Delegates is moving forward with emergency legislation to support port workers affected by the closure of the Port of Baltimore. The bill, which authorizes tapping into the state’s Rainy Day fund, aims to provide temporary wage support for workers, subsidies for small businesses, and scholarships for fallen transportation workers. It also suspends certain unemployment requirements and boosts bonding authority for bridge reconstruction.
