Cops Cracking Down on Turnstile Jumpers

New York City cops say they're cracking down on fare evasion, like turnstile jumping and entering through the emergency exit.

(New York, NY) – Following a series of high-profile, violent incidents within the New York City subway system, cops are cracking down on fare evasion. After a fight on an A-Train in Brooklyn resulted in a man being shot in the head with his own gun, cops explained he was an alleged fare beater — then said people who enter the system illegally are often up to no good.

So, as of Monday, “Operation Fair Play” is underway. NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper says the goal is to make sure people are paying their fair share at the turnstile. Hundreds of cops will be deployed within the system.

The MTA has said fare evasion costs around $500 million annually in lost revenue. Some have argued that congestion pricing in Manhattan is an effort to recoup that — at the expense of commuters who drive.
