(New York, NY) — An NYPD officer is dead after being shot during a routine traffic stop in Far Rockaway, Queens Monday night. Police say 31-year-old officer Jonathan Diller was investigating a vehicle, that was parked illegally in a bus stop when a passenger in the car shot him. Police say he asked the two people to get out of the car and that’s when the suspect, Guy Rivera, a passenger shot Diller who later died at Jamaica hospital. The officer’s partner then shot Rivera who was sent to the hospital and is expected to survive.
The 31-year-old officer had been with the NYPD for just three years, collecting a number of awards along the way. His neighbors in Massapequa Park say Diller was a giving kind of guy. He leaves behind a wife and very young child.
