(New York, NY) — New York city’s biggest slumlord is in police custody. Daniel Ohebshalom, who has hundreds of open violations at his two Washington Heights apartment buildings could end up sitting in a jail cell for 60 days. Tenants in the buildings on 170th Street, say rats run the hallways, water and heat go off and on, and ceilings have collapsed. The judge who issued a warrant for Ohebshalom’s arrest says he could get out of jail early if he starts making repairs to the buildings he owns.

In October, Ohebshalom was hit with $4.2 million in fines for running illegal short-term rentals. He was living in California, until he agreed to surrender to the Manhattan sheriff’s office on Thursday afternoon. It’s believed that he will serve his jail time at Rikers Island.
