(New York, NY) — McDonald’s has been hit by a system failure impacting restaurants across the globe. The fast food chain says it’s aware of the outage that has forced the closure of many locations, but insists it is not a cybersecurity event. Some stores have been unable to handle customers online and app orders. The outage is being felt in U.S. and as far away as  Australia, Japan, and the United Kingdom. The company says it’s working to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. A cashier at a McDonald’s in midtown says their IT system went down around 1 a.m., but was back up by 5 a.m.

All McDonald’s restaurants are connected to a global network, and owners say that is what has been down. Downdetector, a website that tracks outages, finds the problems started around 1 a.m. eastern time in the United States.  McDonald’s has around 40,000 restaurants around the world.
