(New York, NY) — New York City is suing TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and YouTube for fueling a mental health crisis among teenagers. Mayor Adams says the city’s lawsuit seeks to force the social media giants to change their behavior. He says the online apps have algorithms built to keep teenagers scrolling on them for hours at a time. Adams says there is evidence that time spent online plays on the mental health of young Americans. New York spends more than 100-million dollars on youth mental health services each year.
The lawsuit is part of a plan to force the tech companies to change their behavior, and for the city to recover the millions it has spent on the treating the mental health of teenagers.
