(New York, NY) – A lawsuit has been filed by the MTA against New York City Comptroller Brad Lander. The legal action claims New York overpaid subway cleaners during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the lawsuit, the claim is made that then-Comptroller Scott Stringer misinterpreted a state law in making the mistake.
This dates back to 2020 when the pandemic was raging in New York City. Subway system was eventually affected, with trains taken out of service overnight for deep cleaning. Teams were brought in to disinfect and clean the train cars. In the lawsuit, the MTA says Stringer overpaid the workers under the allegedly mistaken belief their work fell under the general labor law guidance for contractors. The transit agency claims that led to incorrectly inflated pay.
