Members of the New York State Police Swift Water Rescue Team works in the Village of Mamaroneck Sept. 29, 2023. Heavy rains caused flooding throughout the region.

(Albany, NY) – The Federal Government is taking a step that aims to help New York following last autumn’s devastating rainfall that caused major damage in the downstate region. Governor Kathy Hochul asked — and President Biden has said yes — as the White House approved a major disaster declaration for the region. This means federal assistance aimed at supporting recovery and reconstruction can flow into partts of the Hudson Valley, New York City, and on Long Island.

The funds can also help things like debris removal and making repairs to infrastructure, as well as public buildings that may have sustained damage. It was back on September 29, 2023 when an absolute deluge of rain fell on New York — including more than eight inches of rain in parts of Brooklyn. The Mid-Hudson region was also hard hit — Westchester got another six inches of rain in a 24-hour period. Nassau County received the same total. At that time, Governor Hochul had declared a state of emergency for parts of the state.
