How About a Cocktail With Your Ferry Ride?

The New York City Department of Transportation plans to sell food and beverages on the Staten Island Ferry for the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

(Staten Island, NY) – As New Yorkers commute across the harbor this coming fall, refreshments will be available on the Staten Island Ferry. That was just announced by the New York City Department of Transportation. As of March 7, vendors will be invited to submit proposals for the sale of food and drinks aboard in-service vessels — including booze!

Alcoholic beverages will be among those being offered, and this marks the first time refreshments will be served on boats since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Mayor Adams touted the city’s investments toward improving the ferry system, and noted the Staten Island ferry in particular is vital to keeping working-class New Yorkers moving. Adams said “New Yorkers are riding our ferries for work and for fun, and they deserve to kick back, have a snack, and enjoy the journey without a second thought.”

New York City’s transportation chief agrees. DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said there are “few better feelings than taking in the Manhattan skyline from the Staten Island Ferry with a cold beverage in hand.” So, perhaps as soon as this fall, New Yorkers can take a sip while floating along on the 25-minute ride.
