(New York, NY) – Former President Donald Trump has been ordered to pay Elle writer E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million for defamation. Carroll has accused Trump of raping her in the 1990s, inside of a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman. Last year a jury found Trump liable for sexual assault and defamation — but not rape. At that time, Carroll was awarded a combined $5 million.
This lawsuit stems from denials Trump issued in 2019, while in the White House. Carroll had published an excerpt from a book in a magazine — and the excerpt contained the allegations.
Some controversial aspects of the case were not allowed to be disclosed to jurors. That includes a striking resemblance between Carroll’s allegations and a plot within an episode of Law and Order: Special Victim’s Unit. Also, Carroll posed on the front of New York Magazine in a dress she alleged to have worn during the assault. But after reports emerged that dress was only sold sometime after 1995, Carrol changed the date of the alleged assault. At any rate, the jury has ordered Carroll ought to be paid $83.3 — inclusive of $11 million dollars for a “reputation repair program,” and $65 in punitive damages.
