New York, NY — Mayor Adams says social media has become a health hazard for young people, calling it an urban toxin. Adams compared social media to the dangers of smoking cigarettes, and urged parents to keep children off social media platforms. He says the city is going to partner with local lawmakers in seeking a solution to the problem. Adams says companies like TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook are fueling a mental health crisis by designing their platforms to be addictive. He says he will not stand by and let Big Tech monetize our children’s privacy and jeopardize their mental health.
